Hi All,

I'd really appreciate your collective advice on how to do tutoring. I find myself without a teaching post, and while I am getting interviews, I am just not getting the jobs.

As a result, I'd like to tutor but I need advice on several matters:

1. Advertising-
Do you think creating cards or leaflets is best and posting through letter boxes?
Would you advise gum tree?

2. Contracts-
Where would I download an editable one?
Would I need to have a slightly different one for each child according to their needs?

3. Terms and conditions-
Regarding payments etc is there a place I could get one to download?

4. Status- Self employed, sole trader, ltd? Which would be most appropriate?

5. DBS
How can I make it clear that I have one and then keep it updated as tutor?

Any advice on any of these matters would be appreciated. If I have left anything off, please let me know.

I find myself in a difficult postion, as I need to be available to take my youngest to hospital appointments during the week, and so I can only work in evenings and weekends. I have sought work outside of teaching, but I realise I need to use the skills I have as effectively as possible.

1. Leaflets will get you out there, but may not be the most cost effect method. Is it possible for you to put up notices in local library, community centres, shops, Tesco, Asda etc ? These are sometimes free. I haven't used GumTree, but it may be worth a look. Also, take out adverts in any free local papers. Also, depending on your situation, could you contact ex-colleagues or arrange for local schools to take a flyer ? Placing an advert on a website and using social media may help.

2 & 3 I will PM you a (sanitised) copy of mine. It is in PDF format, since I can't appear to be able to upload the Word file. It may be what you want, if not - please dump.

4. I would strongly urge self employed as a sole trader. Although you will probably have to fill out self assessment returns, you can claim legitimate business expenses.

Best of luck with finding your first student

here goes

I have never created leaflets or paid to advertise. I used to have a website but there were costs involved and I have recently let it go because my Facebook page costs nothing and brings me in a fair amount of work. Get your friends and family to share the page, share it on local selling sites on facebook which are also free. Share hints and tips for your subject or news articles as well as adverts themselves. People scroll through adverts unless they are looking for something specific.

Get yourself a profile on Tutor Hunt / First Tutors / UK tutors. It is free. Do a search and see what others in your area are offering and charging. Don't undersell yourself. Be realistic about how far you are prepared to travel. 15 mins each way ,makes an hour long lesson an hour and a half

Look at vehicle graphics for advertising. Best £60 I ever spent was getting my business name and website address on the back windscreen of my car

Is it a tutoring business? I've never really noticed one of those, only manual trades, estate agents and tutoring franchises *not on cars though, just banners and billboards.

That is interesting, as I guess if they see the car then you are prepared to work in that area.

Which area are you in, if you don't mind me asking? A friend tutors and I thought of doing so some years ago, but she found agencies useless.

It may suit you to work permanently at a tutoring place. There are some around and you could try and get a job at one of those.

I find with tutoring it all depends on your subject! Some people do well others don't. If you have a high demand subject that requires exams and lots do it then you will be fine.

Once you have one student and if you do a good job they will just come to you.

There have been threads like this before and the key advice is not to pay for an agency, as@Apple101 pointed out you will be fine if there is demand for your subject and apart from anything else there are agencies where the tutors do not have to pay for the contacts. Tutorhunt is just one and other people may know of others. 

I would not pay an agency if I didn't have to if I were you.

Just to update this thread.

I have been approached to teach English, Maths and Science to GCSE level to one student who has been very ill, but is now able to resume study but is unable to attend school as convalescence will take sometime.

Many thanks for all your kind advice as it has helped me so much.

Get your business card, go to the library, and leave them in some books that are related to your tutoring subject.

Business activity in a UK local city or council library is not allowed by law (they are under council non profit making statutes) and the same applies in community centres where they have a charitable constitutuon

Online Tutoring Qualification

This tutored online studying and teaching course provides an introduction to teaching online courses – empowering prospective online tutors with the opportunity to develop the skills and experience they need to teach effectively online.

The target audience for this course is teachers delivering education online, academics looking to develop new skills for teaching online courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate-levels courses, and organisations involved in Continuing Professional Development who wish to improve the effectiveness of their online and distance learning courses.

The course lasts for eight weeks - see 'Programme Details' section below.

There is usually a maximum of 16 participants on this course.

The course is also suitable for individuals looking to deliver online training or those interested in facilitating online collaborative spaces.

All of the Department's Online Short Courses are developed by our Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning (TALL) unit. To learn more, please see theTALL website.

The course provides a practical introduction to the social, administrative and pedagogical techniques of teaching online. Focused specifically on teaching, rather than on designing or developing online courses, this course will introduce you to the role of the online tutor through selected reading, group discussions, role-playing, case studies and other activities.

This is a tutored online course - there is no requirement for attendance at the University of Oxford at any stage of the course.

In this course we will: explore the online learning environment; identify the responsibilities and practical skills required by online tutors; look at techniques for managing and facilitating online activities; and consider the challenges of teaching online.

Learning by doing is a key concept of this course, and you will have lots of opportunities to try out new skills and techniques and share your experience with other tutors.

This course will use Moodle as the learning management system and Adobe Connect software for synchronous activities (which enables the simultaneous delivery of voice, video and presentation documents to imitate a traditional tutorial environment).

The course will last for eight weeks with the course materials being made available to students for four extra weeks at the end of the course for revision, consolidation and reflection.

The study time of the course will be 35-56 hours to study the core content (5-8 hours per week for each of weeks 1-7) plus any additional time students spend reflecting on the course in weeks 7 and 8. Note that the course offers additional optional material during weeks 2-6 for those who have time for further study.

Introduction and learning outcomes: Each unit will start with a summary of the topics to be covered and will include a list of learning outcomes for the unit.Topics: Three to six topics will be explored in each unit. Topics will include an overview of the subject with a range of activities (some individual and some group) to explore the topic in more detail.Course study: The course discussion forums are open 24 hours per day during the course so you can access these and the course materials anytime. Much of the learning is done via the discussion boards where the tutor will post questions and you and the other students will support each other to provide solutions and answers.Adobe Connect synchronous tutorials: This course includes synchronous tutorials using Adobe Connect. You will not be required to purchase this software.Adobe Connect synchronous tutorial times: The only fixed times are the online synchronous tutorials using the Adobe Connect software where you will see and hear the course tutor and other students via webcam. Note that these tutorials are normally performed at a time which tries to accommodate all the various time zones of the students on the course. The tutor will try to vary the times throughout the course but you may have late or early sessions depending on your time zone. Later in the course you will also set up and run your own tutorials with other students on the course using this software and this can be done at a time to suit you. Click here for more information about the timing of the synchronous tutorials.Summary and reflections: Each unit will include a summary providing an overview of the key points and will also include a 'reflections' discussion forum to encourage participants to reflect on their experiences and what they have learnt so far.Further reading: Most units will conclude with a list of further reading.

There will be no formal assessment for this course.

In order to complete this course and receive a University of Oxford certificate of completion, you will need to actively take part in the group activities; complete the four tutor-marked assignments; give a presentation in one of the "Presenting and facilitating online" online tutorials held during unit 4 of the course; and participate in a minimum of two of the other online tutorials delivered during the course. You are expected to make at least one substantive posting to the majority of the discussion topics initiated by your tutor.

The first week of the course will be self-paced (tutor support will be available if required during this week, week 0), weeks 1-6 will be tutor-led. The course tutor will also be available during week 7 to answer any outstanding questions from students, but there will be no formal course activities during this week and week 8 is an additional non-tutored week and is for final student interactions, reflection and consolidation.

The course remains open and the materials are available to you for four additional weeks after the end of the course.

Course Tutors

The course will be delivered by a dynamic, internationally-acclaimed tutor from the University of Oxford and industry, specialising in e-learning and the online environment.

Course delivery and numbers

The whole course is delivered online through theDepartment for Continuing Education, Rewley House, Oxford and no attendance at Oxford University is required.

There are usually a maximum of 16 participants on this course.

IT Support

A few days before the start of the course you will receive a personal password so you can access all the course materials and discussion forums and contact your tutor. An IT helpdesk is available online through the TALL (Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning) unit at the University of Oxford.

Certification

Participants who satisfy the course requirements will receive a University of Oxford certificate of completion. The sample is an illustration only, and the wording will reflect the course and dates attended.

In order to complete this course and receive a certificate of completion, you will need to:

actively take part in the group activitiescomplete the four tutor-marked assignmentsgive a presentation in one of the "Presenting and facilitating online" online tutorials held during unit 4 of the courseparticipate in a minimum of two of the other online tutorials delivered during the course.

Professor, School of Business, Algonquin College, Canada

Kathlyn Bradshaw, a professor in the School of Business at Algonquin College (Ottawa, Canada), teaches face-to-face, hybrid (blended), as well as fully online courses. Kathlyn also works closely with College faculty, staff and senior administrators on specialized departmental projects, including curriculum planning and design, course development, and proposal and report writing. She initiated a project at the college to connect successfully the 3D virtual world Second Life with a fully online Algonquin course, and gave a presentation about this project at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference held in Second Life. Currently, she is undertaking research related to the transference of active learning practices from face-to-face to eLearning, and gave a presentation on this topic at a conference at the University of Central Florida.

Kathlyn has a Master of Arts degree from Carleton University (2006), specializing in Applied Language Studies. Currently she is completing a Doctorate with the EdD program at University of Calgary. Her areas of interest include gaming in education, eLearning, technology in the classroom, as well as instructional analysis and design, specifically at the post-secondary level. She also teaches the Effective Online Tutoring course at the University of Oxford.
